Essay Writing
Competition

As the Egyptian Union of Liberal Youth, our aim
is to promote the liberal ideas and the concept of personal freedom. Hardly any
other word is misunderstood and confused as much as the word liberal.
Unfortunately, it is very difficult to find good texts about liberalism in the
Arabic language. Often the enemies of liberalism, radicals and extremists on
the left and the right, write about the ideas. Also: the majority of the
publications in Arabic are translations from foreign languages.

We want to change all this and want to ask you
to help us. Our objective is to publish a good book that explains to the
Egyptian youth in their own language what it means to be a liberal today.

To find the best texts, we are organizing an
essay writing contest about liberalism. To create an incentive, we will give
attractive prizes to the writers of the best texts.

All the texts must deal with the central
question of our competition:

WHY AM I A LIBERAL?

There are many ways to answer this question. At
the heart of your essay should be answers to the questions why you believe
liberalism is a good thing for the Egyptian youth and Egypt.

Like all competitions, ours also has some
rules:

Anybody under the age of 35 years may
participate.. They must be original and in colloquial Arabic. Only texts
submitted by email to mosab2a@librali.net will be reviewed. The texts should not exceed
2000 words. The deadline for submissions is 31. March 2009.

The procedure: Three prominent experts will be
our judges and select from all the texts the twenty best. All these 20 texts
will be published in a book; the winners will receive ten copies of this book
with his/her essay and also the amount of 500 L.E. as a prize. The writer of
the best essay will also be invited to a two-week-stay in Germany for an
international seminar on liberalism sponsored by our partner Friedrich Naumann
Foundation.
